My old new life

Dove andrò a studiare?

They say that the more you grow the more time goes by quickly; I can hardly think of how quickly it will go when I'll be 80 years old, because right now it seems so fast.
It's been just over a year since I left for America. Looking back, this was one of the best years of my life and I certainly would not change even a moment.
When I was at the airport, my heart beating fast and with a head full of thoughts and hopes, with the certainty that I was going to live the experience would change my life but at the same time a sense of fear and homesickness. Now I'm back to the life I had before, to the everyday I was used to. The beginning of high school was hard. The beginning of last year, the one that put a point on my life as a teenager and start the rest of my life.
The advice I give to all students abroad at this time, or who want to go abroad next year is to study, challenge yourself with advanced classes. Although it seems weord that you can study in American high schools. If you try to keep in training with the study and not to spend a year doing cooking classes or to go to the gym, the return will be less traumatic.
It's amazing how my days have become full, between school, work and study. Let's say that I needed a day of fever to give me a moment of peace and concentrate on writing.
In these months I have to make the most difficult decision of my life, where I will spend the next few years? Where am I going to study? What will be the consequence of my choice?
It's always nice to have dreams but always difficult to achieve them.

Attend college in America would be the Dream of my life coming true, but at the same time and it's hard to fulfill a dream that costs $ 70,000 per year.

See you soon

I’m here in Washington, sitting on a chair and waiting for my flight, the flight that is gonna take me back in Italy. All the memories are popping up in my mind like millions of flashbacks. All the smiles and tears, all the little moments of joy and all the moments that brought me to realizing that Texas is home. 10 months ago I left my family, my friends and my life and left; put few (okay  maybe a lot) of clothes in a suitcase and hope in my heart.
I could have never thought that this moment would come so fast, i haven’t realized that I was leaving until yesterday night when I slept for the last time in my bed. There are not enough words to describe the feeling, it’s like a part of me will always remain in San Antonio, and nothing is gonna change that.
I have never been a huge fan of goodbyes, indeed i kinda hate them.

I spent hours yesterday night, trying to find the right words to say, but i couldn’t. The reality is that my heart is not ready to say goodbye, 10 months flew away. It feels like yesterday when i got at the airport and now I’m here, nervous to see everyone back in Italy and heartbroken because of the many goodbyes.

I don’t really wanna talk about it because it still breaks my heart. This is not a goodbye Texas, is a see you soon.

ending thoughts

The end of the year is always chaotic, there are thousands of things to do and no time available. Besides stress for finals and AP exams, the end of the year means many activities and events. The past few moths have been really busy, reason why i kind of ignored my blog. Starting with all my AP exams* which completely dried my brain and took all the last motivation that I had towards studying (I procrastinated a little bit since then). The following weeks have been super busy and everyday I had something new to do and something else to finish. I had my fashion show and I have to be honest, I thought my dress was gonna be a total failure, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought and it was a fun and new experience. Then I had prom, but I’m gonna write a separate post about it.
Last week I had the Varsity banquet, which is a dinner for all the Varsity Athletes, during which the coaches of all the sports give awards and recognition to the athletes.
This Saturday there was the Senior vs. Juniors Powder Puff game. For all the non-american readers, the Powder Puff game is simply girls playing football and boys (supposedly cheerleading). I don’t know how can boys do that every week, I have bruise all over my body and I’m sore. They also wear pads and 10 layers of protection, but they also get hit 10 times harder. Juniors lost, even if we should have won since the refs were kinda “cheering” for the seniors. We almost had 5 fights and an almost broken nose, but besides these little accidents it was a really nice day.
One of the many things that I appreciate the most about american high school is traditions. There is a little traction for everything and one of them is Senior Letters. Juniors spell SENIOR with big letters and ask friends to do them. So every day for 7 days you receive a letter, which is decorated in the front and there is a letter. It’s a nice tradition and something material that I can bring back home to remember my friends and the memories that we shared.
Last but not least, Graduation is the ceremony that celebrates seniors and the end of their high school careers. In school colors all the seniors walk up the stage and receive their diplomas. In tears they say goodbye to one of the biggest part of life and say goodbye to the safe bubble that was with them for 18 years, entering the new reality of college.

It is hard to write this post, because it means that this is the end. I am not gonna write my goodbye post here, because i’m still not me tally prepared to say goodbye to everything and to leave behind me most of the best memories of my life. I’ll save the sadness for the next post and I’ll use these last few lines to say congratulations to all the seniors and to wish them the best luck in college!

The Big Apple

Why do people travel? I feel like everyone could have a different answer, but basically it’s the same one. The sense of adventure, of discovering and learning new cultures.
I am only 18 but I can consider my self lucky because I had the opportunity to travel around the world. But what makes this traveling so amazing is Family.

My dad came here during spring break and I cannot explain the happiness of hugging him again after so long.

Of course it was raining. For the few people that  don’t live in Texas and cannot understand the frustration of this weather, just so y’all can understand, as soon as he left it was sunny again. But there’s a bright side to everything, we went to New York! It was so so so so so cold, after 8 months in Texas, I was not prepared to the cold.
We were there for only few days although I tried to enjoy the few days in the Big Apple.
The first day we went to the Chelsea Market, the Meatpacking District, Washington Square Park (I saw NYU, which is even more beautiful than what I’ve ever dreamed of) and the World Trade Center Memorial.
The second day we had a walk through Central Park and the MOMA!!!! I love modern art, so being there was simply amazing and fascinating.
One of my childhood dreams was going to Broadway (of course to see something, I’m a terrible singer!) and on March 12 I achieved that little dream. My dad bought tickets to see mamma mia and it was even better than the movie. The actors were singing, acting and dancing around the stage making it seem so easy. No one ever gives credits for stage actors, they memorize everything and they have to make sure that every single scene is perfect, because they don’t have a second opportunity to do it again.
The third and last day we visited South Manhattan and  Brooklyn. I fell in love with Brooklyn and his hipster environment. I’m gonna move to New York one day, and I wouldn’t turn down a nice house with view on Manhattan. For dinner we went to the best Steak House: Peter Luger. I am not a big fan of red meat, but that is definitely one of my favorite restaurants and I recommend it to everyone that has the opportunity to stop in Brooklyn.

I love New York and it’s one of my favorite place in the whole world, but the only thing that made it perfect is the fact that my dad was there with me.

FFF (fortune, family and friends)

I was chilling around and I started reading a blog of another exchange student; I never thought about the fact that I've been super lucky with my host family. A lot of students have had several problems caused by the family it self and by the way that they have been treated. I really don't know how I could have gone through a lot of my days without the support of my host family.
Another negative side that I read a lot about is "friends"; a lot of guys indeed support the idea that some of the kids here are fake. I can assure y'all that at the beginning it was hard and I faced a lot of hard situations in which I felt a little bit lonely, often because of how some "friends" treated me, but fortunately not anymore. I have wonderful friends that are always here to support me.
I can't deny that the first few months were hard and I felt homesick a lot; but now I have a second home, a second family and an amazing group of friends. I'm not physically and mentally prepared to leave everything and everyone yet, and the thought of it breaks my heart.

[I'm so proud of how much I'm writing]

sugar's scientists

Have you ever thought about all the scientist that gather up in a lab and study sugar and his compounds? Of all the effort that they put in studying it and creating sweets? This morning I ate for the first time Lucky Charms, a brand of cereal that I've never heard about but apparently really common here in the U.S. … I thought they were delicious!
Maybe a chemistry degree is not that un useful, if I can create my own cereal brand. This post is dedicated to all the scientists that found a way to make sweets and chocolate taste that good!! (I'm sure also a lot of dentists love y'all too)

Let's Rodeo San Antonio!!

Where should I start? I have so many things to talk about that I don't even know what to talk about! First of all ladies and gentlemen, I'm 18, even if it doesn't really matters here.
But a few days ago I signed my first paper and I have to admit that I felt like an adult. But in most cases it feels the same.
My Birthday was amazing, it was one of the best days of my life. I had so much fun and my bestfriend bought me a cookie cake (100% american) (the picture is above)
I celebrated the whole weekend and I think I had one of the best birthdays I could have asked for, even if I missed my family and friends a little.
To celebrate my hostfamily bought tickets for the rodeo, a very very very special gift. It was an amazing experience, specially when the cowboys rode the bulls! Think about western movies with the typical men with cowboy hats and boots… they were everywhere! At the end of the night there was a performance by John Legend!! I felt so lucky to have such a nice and special hostfamily that made me spend a fabulous night!! (pictures above)

A glass can be considered half full or half empty. Am I already half way, or do I still have half of a year here? Time goes by quickly and I can not believe the fact that it already has been 5 months. 5/10, ½, 0.5, so many ways to say it, but not one to accept it.
I think I'll stop thinking about it or I might just become depressed.
I usually start a post and having an idea of what I want to write, a topic I want to talk about. I promised myself that I would write more, and the truth is that at this moment I have absolutely no idea what to write. After several minutes spent staring at the blank screen I came to the conclusion that, since I have no big news that I wanna talk about, I will share the small news that happened in recent days, which probably two-thirds of you won’t care about it.
First of all in exactly 13 days is my birthday, 18 years old, I can’t believe it! Here nothing will change since the big birthdays are 16 and 21, but whatever.
On Tuesday I will start practice in the morning, which means getting up every day at 5:30/5:45, just the idea repulses me. People who know me well know that I’m not either a morning person or a punctual person.
This week we had the final exams at school and I must say I'm very satisfied (except English, but you try to write an essay in an hour completely in English)
I think that's all for today, I apologize for the post without purpose and probably boring, but I'm bored so I decided to write!

For all those who have a few questions that would like to ask, this is my email eva.bijlsma@gmail.com! Feel free to ask me whatever you want, I will always try to reply as soon as possible

New Years Resolutions

Nuovo anno, nuove aspettative e nuove promesse.

New year, new expectations and new promises. It is strange to think how in one year life can change, during this year I have learned a lot. Lately I've had unpleasant adventure that led me to think about why I made this experience; There are many explanations, it’s not easy to explain why at 17 years old I thought to put my whole life in a suitcase (which must not exceed 22 kg), leaving home, friends and family and leave for a new country where they speak a different language and where I don’t know anyone.
The reason I came to this conclusion is that there isn’t a specific reason. The sense of adventure and curiosity to discover new cultures and make new adventures brought me to live the amazing experience that I’m having.
Going back to the new year also I have made my “new years resolution”. On one hand I want to do the usual list, the prototype of every women: lose weight, go to the gym and blah blah blah; but sadly I love eating and I for sure don’t wanna be on a diet so I made a list of good original intentions. (of course one of the point is to write more my blog!)

Holidays (and a bit of food)

I'm the worst blogger ever, but trust me, this experience takes so much of my free time, I'm never resting. I also had a block and I didn't know what to write about; I created this blog in order to help other people understanding and "living" the experience that I'm living. So I thought that rather than tell you about my days, I could tell you how Americans manage holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas; I must admit that they do everything big and take the holidays very seriously.
Halloween involves adults and children; all the houses are decorated and the evening of the 31st thousands of children in the streets, all masked carrying around baskets and bags containing candy, lollipops and chocolates. It could seem the same, but the difference is that everyone feels the "spirit". Schools, work and even in the shops around are decorated for Halloween. And no matter how old you are, you will trick or treat on Halloween night.
Thanksgiving is a holiday that is celebrated only in America on the fourth Thursday of November. Pilgrims led it in 1621 and it celebrates a day when we thank God for the harvest and for what happened in the year that is coming to an end. The menu is very traditional and follows recipes handed down from family to family. The most famous dish is the turkey, which ironically is listed as the least preferred dish by American families among those offered during lunch. It's a day that you spend with your family and that is completely dedicated to "eat as much as you can". The other main dishes you can enjoy are the "stuffing" (which is eaten with turkey), mashed potatoes, casserole (which I still don't understand what it is), pumpkin pie, pecan pie (a really common nut here) and many other things that I do not know exactly how to explain since they are traditional American dishes, so not easy to explain. The absolute favorite thing made by Americans is the period of time between the evening of Thanksgiving Day until the next morning around noon, called "black Friday". About 12 hours when all the shops are having crazy sales and sell off everything. We see scenes like the jungle where moms and daughters jump on each other as football players in order to get a bag or a pair of shoes. Or even worse, lines from 2 to 3 hours to get in a shop, things that are really crazy.
My absolute favorite is Christmas. As in all the other holidays, the Americans are very traditional and sometimes they tend to exaggerate a little. With my family we started to decorate the house the weekend after Thanksgiving. We spent all day decorating the Christmas tree, putting together our ceramic village and putting decorations throughout the house. Unlike some American families we didn't put the lights outside the house. Some houses are full of lights and decorations outside, a real show. Some streets are decorated so much that it seems to be the north pole. As in Italy during Christmas you eat a lot, but so much .. I am seriously concerned about when I will start practice again! The 24th evening we went to eat Italian; It was fun to talk to the owner in Italian, sometimes I have the impression that the Italian is a language invented by me, since I use very little lately. The 25 morning the kids woke us up at 6:45 (6:45!!!!!) to open presents and the "stockings" that hang near the tree and that usually contain candy and small gifts. Abby and Landen were so excited, and Hailey and I were like zombies (I'm not kidding). After opening gifts we went to our grandparents' house, which live practically in front of us and opened other gifts. Contrary to what I thought, I received many gifts. Most of them were "small" but with a lot of meaning. The most important present i received is an album with all the pictures we have done so far, and space for the future once; pajamas and blankets (which are the softest in the world); and one that I totally didn't expect: A silver bracelet that you can add as many charms, each with a meaning. Christmas was very special everyone made me feel at home; I missed Italy of course, because is not easy to spend Christmas without the family. But I'm grateful for the Christmas I had.
